ON THIS DAY...JULY 22ND 2016

Wednesday July 22, 2020
Rohan Tungate recorded a maximum and Josh Grajczonek was just one point short of doing the same as the Somerset 'Cases' Rebels defeated the Workington Comets by seventeen points.

Rebels supporters attending the Premier league meeting at the Oaktree Arena had not seen a home side defeated in the past seventeen outings, dating back to the night Edinburgh had won on August 11 2015, and with Workington having been KO cup conquests for the Rebels earlier in the year, expectations were high.

Just as they had done so in that cup visit, Workington arrived with intentions and the Rebels were reduced to equipping Josh Grajczonek in the black and white as early as heat five in a bid to try and to keep in touch with the Comets tails. The outcome was an awarded 7-2 after visitor Claus Vissing had fallen in his quest to try and reel in the Rebels skipper. It was enough to half the deficit but still the Rebels needed at least two heat advantages to go in to the ascendency, and they hadn't managed one in the first four.

Spurred on though by that heat five breakthrough, the Rebels banged in five more straight heat gains, a maximum heat eight from Jake Allen and Bradley Wilson-Dean squeezed in amongst the four 4-2's, and the context of the match, with the Rebels leading 38-31, being turned on its head.

Kenneth Hansen gained his only victory of the night in winning heat 12 but if were Workington were plotting a late recovery Somerset totally blitzed it, sharing that twelfth and then dropping just one point in the final three heats to run out convincing 55-38 winners and undefeated in eighteen home matches.

Team boss Garry May credited the Comets with a performance far better than the final score suggested admitting "we are developing something of a trait in being slow starters and they [Workington] looked set to make us pay for it early on and we really had to dig in to turn things around which we did in the end but we were made to work hard for it so full credit to the Comets for playing their part in an entertaining meeting."
