KNOCKOUT CUP TAKES CENTRE STAGE THIS WEEK

Tuesday May 07, 2019
Attentions to turn to Knockout Cup action on Wednesday night at the Oaktree when the 'Cases' Somerset Rebels host the visit of the Redcar Bears.

The last time the Rebels rode in the second tier of British speedway they reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual cup winners Glasgow in 2016, whilst last season they triumphed in the corresponding competition in top flight British speedway.

In the club's previous 19 years of racing they have won five KO cup finals and team boss Garry May is keen to see that extend further in this, their 20th Anniversary campaign.
"Of course we want to go all the way in this competition, winning trophies is a good habit to get into and the boys will want the extra meetings that progress brings, though for now we just need to concentrate on negotiating this first round and that means delivering two good performances this week."

Redcar have had something of a mixed bag of results so far this season, claiming double victory over Newcastle in a home and away challenge, but suffered three heavy away defeats in the Northern Group of the SGB Championship Shield, together with a home loss to Leicester in the same competition.

But, their arrival at the Oaktree brings the ever-popular long-serving former Rebel Charles Wright back to the fore. Having produced an unbeaten performance for the Bears last Friday when they beat Scunthorpe 49-41, Wright showed his talents on the BT Sport televised Premiership contest between Swindon and Peterborough on Monday, racking up an impressive paid 18 from 7 rides, so the Rebels will need to do a containing job on their old ally.

Wright is joined by Dane Michael Palm-Toft and Cornishman Ben Barker as the Bears' spearhead, with Tom Bacon, Jordan Stewart, Nathan Greaves and Jack Smith completing the septet that are set to face an unchanged Rebels side.

The two sides will meet in the second leg on Friday.
